Birthday Party

for Barbara

If I died this very instant,
they’d find only an empty matchbook

and a couple coins in my pockets.
I want to be someone else

by my next birthday,
but I’d still want you to be

naked and churning above me,
or at least solemnly blowing out

the tiny pink candle of my heart.
