We Traveled

We traveled that June in a country of lovely women.

They paced just out of eyeshot in the shrill summer light.

While there, we translated and mistranslated regular verbs.

There were neutral cases, as well as some delays in transmission.

We avoided the dictionary of nerves, never admitted to paraphrase.

Now it's autumn and ruined as we are put your head in my lap.

Turn on Berlitz.  We’ll listen as the strange phrases tumble

like beautiful women from another country.
