The Cold

Sweaters, shirts with high collars,
scarves, twisted twice, shawls
crossed under crossed arms,
hands clasping ribs’ sides.

Everyone knows the old, especially
women, especially women fleshed close
to the bone, get cold, yet it comes as
a surprise, the one spot that,

warmed, warms the rest: back of neck,
where in the presence of truth hairs rise.
