  Holiday Trek Without Any Snow

 Helen Losse

We will be leaving soon
on the long car ride to visit our kin,
where we’ll talk and swap gifts,
eat veggies and munchies.

We will gather because it is Christmas.

Perhaps, someone will sing.

There are no children among us

to play in the long yellow grass—

no snow in sight to go dashing through.

The sun is so bright my face aches.
