  Worming

John Grey

She wonders what it would be like
to be a worm in a piece of fruit.
Would it feel like jail?
Would it be a comfort knowing
you could get by on what it provided,
shelter, food, even a man somewhere
out there, not even knowing what
he had, but clutching it sure,
rubbing it into a shine sure.
Even now, her lover is
examining the mango,
feeling its plumpness,
eyes glazed over with
its seep of inviting juice.
What if his first bite
was the one that snapped
her contented life in two?
You never know with fruit.
You never know
when the command is given...
eat.
